The Artist explores the myth in the new exhibit – Nanaimo News Bulletin

An artist born with color vision deficiency will showcase her love of mythology at the Art 10 Gallery.

Suzanne Orlov, a member of the artist group since 2020, will be showcasing approximately 24 pieces, including her ‘Mythology’ show on the gallery’s feature wall.

“I’ve been very interested in myth since my childhood,” he said. “When I grew up, I realized that he was still interested in me. And it can be fun, not just for kids – reading all these legends and stories. “

While considering his current show, Orlov said he has noticed legends and legends that have been displayed and preserved in different parts of the world.

“When you compare European legends and fairies with Romanian and Greek mythology, you can see the difference. What fascinates me the most is that in Europe, the gods created the world. In western mythology, the world is created by gods – it’s completely the opposite, ”he says.“ The world is dominant – it’s something bigger than gods, demi -gods and humans. And you feel that people are equal to the gods in western mythology. And it’s very interesting. I had never read that before in European legends or fairy tales because it was a new idea – a completely new idea to me and I was fascinated by it. ”

In his show, which was inspired by Greek mythology and ancient mythology, Orlov said he wanted to focus on goddesses, because he felt they were not represented, and to avoid “muscular” male forms.

Originally from Sevastopol, a major port on the Black Sea and recognized worldwide as part of Ukraine, Orlov said he had not yet been “bitten” by Slavic mythology in art, but could seriously consider it for a show on future.

“It’s very rich in mythology, Slavic and Eastern European. There’s a lot to cover as an actor because they have crazy, funny characters. You can’t imagine,” he said.

The movements in her work illustrate an emotional range through her use of colors-which, until recently, she said she hadn’t been brave enough to experiment with.

“Sometimes I mix colors and confuse them… My previous pieces, they turned black and white… When I bought color-blind glasses… I was surprised when I started using color skin. My friends told me that my skin color was no longer green. ”

Orlov’s ‘Mythology’ can be viewed at the Art 10 Gallery in Nanaimo North Town Center until the end of August.
