Eric Demarchelier is a French-American artist whose work covers figurative, geometric abstraction, abstract expressionism, landscape, and portraiture.

Demarchelier, known for his diverse and engaging abstract styles, combines formal contrasts of color and shape or texture and form to evoke the perceptual field. His geometric abstractions ’interlocking rectangles refer not only to the visual framing of the painted picture and to the rectangles of the windows, doors, and walls where they are located, but also to the discursive nature of thought. , which uses contrast frames to generate an underlying idea.

This approach to abstraction has been extended to a series of works in which the scraped gossamer shows the motion of fused, unformed shapes charged by the motion of unstable colors. Despite their very abstract natures, wind or fuzzy surfaces provide figurative meaning, sometimes suggesting the mapping of geographical boundaries but set in a retrograde composition that captures perception a moment before. it is processed into concept.

Demarchelier departs from the hard edge of his representational and geometric abstraction to show the vague puzzle pieces of reactive shapes that move in the dynamism of changing systems, a technique that emphasizes the role of emotion in determining perception.

Demarchelier’s symbolic painting is clearly compared to his abstract work, which offers striking, almost familiar landscape views as well as great still life works enriched by patina hues and balance of intelligent composition. His portraiture ranges from the bold simplicity of pre-pop portraiture to the vibrant and vividly defined human forms that are between moments of visualization, realization, and remembrance, to faceless bodies. in private poses that show undefined inner intimacy.

Demarchelier, trained by the master painter of St. Petersburg Leonid Gervis, has been active for the past 25 years. He was born in Normandy and currently resides in New York City and Shelter Island, where he maintains a studio.
