Artist Profiles: Júlio Resende | World Music Central

Pianist, Composer, Producer Júlio Resende was born on June 10, 1982, in Faro, Algarve region, Portugal, although he spent his childhood in nearby Olhão.

Júlio Resende is best known as a pioneer of a unique new genre called “Fado-Jazz”. His improvisation techniques include a variety of music genres, including jazz, fado, classical music and even electronic music.

Resende’s first adventure in the Fado-Jazz genre was the Amália Rodrigues tribute album. The album, titled “Amália por Júlio Resende” was released in 2013. As a result, she released additional albums in which she explored the possibilities of Fado-Jazz.

Since 2019, Júlio Resende has undertaken an artistic partnership with pianist Maria João Pires on a project that unites the worlds of classical music and improvisation, which the pianists have called: “Maria João Pires & Júlio Resende – Dialogues “.

Júlio Resende also worked as a soundtrack composer for Netflix’s Spanish-language film Elisa y Marcela (2019), directed by Isabel Coixet and for the HBO series Foodie Love (2019) from the same director.

In 2020, Resende released “Júlio Resende – Fado Jazz Ensemble”. The album includes Portuguese guitar, which interacts with music in a jazz trio.

German jazz label ACT Music released the album “Fado Jazz” in 2022.

In addition to his career in music, Resende also has a degree in Philosophy, having studied at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
